About Windham

Windham is a village in Windham, Ohio in Portage County. It is formed with parts of Windham Township and has a population of about 2,000 people. In 1942, Windham was chosen as a site for an army camp for workers at the Ravenna Arsenal, which is over 21,000 acres. During World War II, the Arsenal employed over 14,000 employees. Since Windham housed many of the employees and families, the area experienced a historical population boom during the 1950s.

The district is made up of two buildings: Katherine Thomas Elementary (Grades PreK-4) and Windham Junior and Senior School (Grades 5-12) with an enrollment of around 500 students. The district is led by Superintendent Aireane Curtis. The mascot for the district is the Bomber Airplane ("Bombers" is the district's nickname), which directly correlates to the rich military history.

Portrait of a Graduate

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Windham Exempted Village Schools is to build a school community that has perseverance, integrity and the motivation to achieve success.

Vision Statement:

We will develop resourceful, adaptable, lifelong learners who will be prepared for future opportunities.

In addition, our district took on the Portrait of a Graduate work in the 2021-2022 school year.  The team, comprised of staff, a board member, parents and students came up with this design of what we want from all of our students when they graduate from Windham High School.

Ohio's New Learning Standards are the foundation for teaching and curricular decisions. The frameworks that have been adopted by the district involve intense, hands-on, individualized learning. Students are fully immersed in reading and writing throughout their literacy journeys at Windham. In addition,  all of the math frameworks that the district has adopted present a conceptualized based approach to math teaching and learning.

STEM is offered to students, starting in kindergarten! The STEM program follows the Project Lead the Way and Inventor Cloud curriculum. The JR/SR High School have eight 3D printers where students can see their creations come to life! Students at the upper level can take various courses such as: Forensics, Women in Stem, Architecture, and Robotics. The STEM program took first place in the Mars Rover Challenge at NASA Glen in 2018! The team had to create a wheel that would function on the Mars terrain, and their presentation and design process was chosen as the best! The STEM program is expanding even more by joining a robotics league with area high schools.

The elementary school is under the leadership of Melissa Malone and the Junior/Senior High School is under the leadership of Principal Zack Burns and Assistant Principal Jessica Horning. The Junior/Senior High offers many sports for students to participate in. Fall sports include: football, cheerleading, golf, and girls' volleyball. In the winter, the school offers girls' and boys' basketball. During the spring season, students can participate in track, softball, or baseball. Windham is a part of the Northeastern Athletic Conference (NAC) along with: Kinsman Badger, Orwell Grand Valley, Cortland Maplewood, Vienna Mathews, and Andover Pymatuning Valley.

The district follows the PBIS framework of Bomber PRIDE: Prepared, Respectful, Integrity, Demonstrate Safety, and Excellence. The students strive to show their Bomber PRIDE through every thing they accomplish.

Other than athletics, there are numerous other academic clubs/societies students can participate in during their middle and high school years at Windham. Band and Junior and Senior High School Choir are offered for those interested in being a part of the Fine and Performing Arts.  Art classes such as Ceramics, Illustration, and Photography are offered to students. National Honor Society is available to middle and high school students who carry a 3.2 grade point average and display the pillars of the society: Character, Scholarship, Leadership and Service. Student Council, Ski Club, Art Club, Drama Club, and History Club are other clubs students have the opportunity to join.
