The American Red Cross visited the Junior High students to work with them on the Pillowcase Project, which is sponsored by Disney.  Students were educated about emergency situations and how to respond when faced with one. Students in Mrs. Harrah's class had the opportunity to learn about various emergencies and create a personalized pillowcase. The Red Cross speaker offered suggestions, tips/tools, and a preparedness toolkit to students. The students worked on their pillowcases during the class period and reviewed vital supplies they should have in their pillowcases in the event of an emergency. The pillowcases and fabric markers were graciously donated.

One of our school goals is to teach students about real-life situations while inviting commuity members and organizations into the classrooms. We thank the American Red Cross for volunteering their time to Windham.

Ms. Sobol's Spanish II class moved their food unit into the kitchen this week. Students prepared culturally authentic Christmas tamales. It is a family oriented Christmas tradition in Hispanic culture for families to spend hours together in preparation of delicious steamed pork tamales.

Corn husks were soaked overnight to become pliable as a wrapper. Meanwhile, students prepared the masa, a corn flour mixed with beef broth and lard. The masa is spread on top of the corn husks. Garlic and onion was chopped and slow cooked with a pork loin. Chile sauce was prepared by boiling dried chile pepper pods and blending the pods with water to make a sauce to add to the meat. The meat topping is spooned on top of the masa, and folded up into the cornhusks to be steamed for 2 hours...

Straight A Grant Recipient

A Straight A Grant has made its way to Northeast Ohio, and the Windham District is one recipient of the grant. Campbell City Schools was the lead applicant on the literacy grant, but included a consortium of school districts including: Austintown, Beaver Local, Brookfield, Newbury, West Branch, Windham, United Local, and Youngstown Community School.

This literacy grant, known as the Northeast Ohio Consortium Straight A Grant, is one of only 23 awarded by the state, from a pool of 141 applicants. The grant is based on a highly successful program, Literacy Collaborative, through The Ohio State University.  Literacy Collaborative uses the award-winning work of early reading experts Dr. Irene Fountas and Dr. Gay Su Pinnell.

The grant will allow for the hiring and training of literacy coaches at Katherine Thomas Elementary and the implementation of a proven program that is backed by decades of research.  One coach will be trained for the 2016-2017 school year as an intermediate (grades 3-5) coach. During the 2017-2018 school years, another coach, specializing in grades K-2, will be trained. Full implementation will take three years.

We are proud to bring this program to our district as we continue to improve our instruction and achievement!

Students Representing Windham at Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies

Student representatives attended two ribbon cutting ceremonies, one in Ravenna and another in Canfield, on Thursday, August 4th. The ceremony held in Ravenna was at the Camp Ravenna Joint Training Center to celebrate the opening of their new facilities. These facilities include a fire and maneuver range where Army units in the Midwest can train for combat. There were three ceremonies total at Camp Ravenna: groundbreaking for the Modified Record Fire Range, the 1st shot at the Fire and Maneuver Range, and a ribbon cutting for the water and sewer project. Social Studies teacher, Stephanie Parish-Smith, accompanied the students to the ceremony.

The second ribbon cutting ceremony took place at the grand opening of the Mahoning County Educational Service Center at their new location in Canfield. Students from 21 districts attended this event along with local officials and community members. The students participated in the ceremony as they cut their own ribbon to celebrate the new building. This state-of-the-art building is over 35,000 square feet where it will provide teachers and administrators with professional development and other services to continue providing students with high quality education.

Thank you to the students who represented our district and attended these events! #windhamfamily

Easy Way to Help Us Raise Money!

Help us raise money for our schools!  The Junior and Senior High is participating in the Tyson Project A+™ program, a fund-raising program sponsored by Tyson Foods, Inc. Through this program, we can raise a significant amount of money for our schools! It’s an easy way to raise much needed funds by sending Tyson Project A+ labels from products you probably already buy.

Here’s how it works: Just clip and collect Tyson Project A+ labels from participating Tyson® product packages and send them to school with your child. We’ll collect the labels for the remainder of this school year, and it will continue into next year. We will send the labels to Tyson Foods, and Tyson Foods will send our school a check. Each label is worth 24¢!

If you have any questions about the program, call Kathy Gutherie in the Junior High Office. You can also find details online- Click Here!

We hope you’ll join us in collecting Tyson Project A+ labels and spread the word to your friends and relatives. It’s such an easy way to raise funds for our schools! Thanks for your support and all that you do for our schools. #windhamfamily

Bomber Buddies Teaches Important Lessons

Bomber Buddies, a program led by former student Jake Sweet, has been a part of the Junior High the past few years. This program teaches our students important life lessons to help them as they grow into high school students and citizens. On Thursday, January 7th, the our 6th-8th graders took part in a leadership activity called the Marshmallow Challenge. This challenge involved students working together as a team and problem solving. It also taught them the importance of leadership skills amongst all members in the group. Students had to build a tower using tape, yarn, one big marshallow, and spaghetti. The goal was to work together to engineer the highest tower (without it falling over) with the big marshmallow placed on the top. To view the TedEd video explaining the activity, click here.

High school students volunteered during their lunch periods to help Sweet work with the students. Bomber Buddies will meet two times a month (every other Thursday) and explore different concepts each time.

Message From Superintendent Isler Regarding Calamity Day Make up

Dear Parents and Guardians:

The Windham Exempted Village Schools have made a final decision on how we will handle the excess calamity days that were necessary this year due to the exceptional winter weather. I appreciate your patience as we took the time to investigate these options.

Based on legislation passed by the Ohio Senate and Ohio House, we have three options:

  1. Add two days to the calendar

  2. Use Blizzard Bags to make up the days

  3. Extend school days in 30 minute increments to make up the lost instruction time

Our district has chosen to implement the Blizzard Bags to make up for the lost instructional time. I do understand that this choice may not be the ideal choice for all, but it is the best choice for the district based on multiple factors.

More information will be distributed through individual classrooms on the exact implementation of the Blizzard Bags in the next few weeks.

One question I have been asked is why we would not take advantage of the additional four days that were allowed by law.   The law is slightly misleading in that Districts must make up at least four days by using the options listed above before they can use the four additional days afforded by recent legislation.

Again I appreciate your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,

Gregg Isler
