Straight A Grant Recipient

A Straight A Grant has made its way to Northeast Ohio, and the Windham District is one recipient of the grant. Campbell City Schools was the lead applicant on the literacy grant, but included a consortium of school districts including: Austintown, Beaver Local, Brookfield, Newbury, West Branch, Windham, United Local, and Youngstown Community School.

This literacy grant, known as the Northeast Ohio Consortium Straight A Grant, is one of only 23 awarded by the state, from a pool of 141 applicants. The grant is based on a highly successful program, Literacy Collaborative, through The Ohio State University.  Literacy Collaborative uses the award-winning work of early reading experts Dr. Irene Fountas and Dr. Gay Su Pinnell.

The grant will allow for the hiring and training of literacy coaches at Katherine Thomas Elementary and the implementation of a proven program that is backed by decades of research.  One coach will be trained for the 2016-2017 school year as an intermediate (grades 3-5) coach. During the 2017-2018 school years, another coach, specializing in grades K-2, will be trained. Full implementation will take three years.

We are proud to bring this program to our district as we continue to improve our instruction and achievement!
