Great Things Happening in Windham Schools

  • 94.9% of our 3rd grade students passed the Ohio Achievement Assessment reading test in May 2011. This passage rate was the highest for all 3rd grade classes in Portage County.
 
  • The Windham Exempted Village School District’s five year financial forecast has the district operating in the black for the next four years.
 
  • In the past four years, Windham Junior High and Windham High School have been awarded competitive grants from E-Tech Ohio, a branch of the state government specializing in using technology in schools, for their use of technology to improve student achievement. These grants have totaled nearly $350,000. The Junior High was one of 48 schools to receive a grant, while the High School was one of the 16 schools to receive a grant.
 
  • Teachers and students use the Windham Exempted Village School web page to receive and post assignment data.
 
  • It is anticipated that in the spring of 2013 the Windham Exempted Village Schools will order a new bus to update its fleet, with a fuel saving more efficient model.
 
  • In August of 2012, the treasurer’s office was able to obtain a funding source that provides free lunches for all students at Katherine Thomas Elementary. In addition, the treasurer’s office, by updating menu procedures, has been able to secure $.06 more per lunch reimbursement district wide. This will generate approximately $5000 in savings for the district.
 
  • Both unions represented in the Windham Exempted Village Schools are under contract through 2014.
 
  • The average ACT score of all Windham High School students for the 2011-2012 school year was a composite score of 22. This was the second highest composite average in Portage County. The ACT test is a measure of college readiness.
 
  • Windham High School, beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, is a partner with Kent State University in the Upward Bound program. The Upward Bound program works with students beginning in their freshman year of high school to prepare them for college.
 
  • As part of the Post Secondary program for high school students, Windham High School has students attending area colleges and universities including Kent State, Kent Trumbull and Hiram.
 
  • Starting with the winter semester, Windham High School students will be able to take classes at Kent State University through online access. College credit, in addition to high school credit, will be available to students participating in this new program.
 
  • In order to continue our development as a 21st century technology district the Windham Exempted Village Schools has formed a partnership with Ephiphany Management Group to offer long term technology planning. EMG is also providing professional development for the staff of the Windham Exempted Village Schools.
 
  • The number of indicators earned by the Windham Exempted Village Schools on the local report card has climbed from 6 indicators in 2010, to 12 in 2011, and 17 indicators in 2012.
 
  • During the 2011-2012 year, 35.2% of all Windham students taking the OAA test in grades 3-8 scored in the advanced or accelerated range. Students scoring in this range have increased from 24.7% in 2007-2008, 28.9% in 2008-2009, 25.3% in 2009-2010 and 32.7% in 2010-2011.
 
  • The performance index (a state ranking tool) of all students in the Windham Exempted Village Schools rose to an all time high of 92.2 in 2011-2012. Since 2007-2008 the performance index has climbed from 83.8 to back to back years of 90.6 and 92.2. A score of 90 or more equates to a district being rated effective.
 
  • In the fall of 2012, Katherine Thomas Elementary received a complete interior paint job, a new tile floor and new skylights through a project in conjunction with the Ohio School Facilities Commission.
 
  • During the spring 2012 OAA testing administration window, the Windham 6th grade class had 90.6% of its students pass the test. This was the highest passage rate in Portage County.
 
  • The Windham Exempted Village School District has become a leader in using 21st century educational practices. Over 80% of all classrooms at Katherine Thomas Elementary, and over 60% of all classes at Windham Junior/Senior High School, have interactive SmartBoard technology for teacher/student use to increase student involvement in lesson delivery.
 
  • Time Warner is updating the internet feed at Katherine Thomas Elementary. Upon completion of this project Ipads will be used in a pilot program in grades 1 and 2. Anticipated start date for the pilot program is January 2013.
 
  • The Windham Exempted Village Schools achieved an EFFECTIVE rating by the Ohio Department of Education for the 2011-2012 school year. This is the second consecutive year for the EFFECTIVE rating.
 
 
  • According to the American Association of School Administrators, the average school district spends between 82% and 85% of their operating expenses on employee benefits . The Windham Exempted Village Schools spend only 73% of their operating expenses on employee benefits and salaries.
 
  • Spanish is currently being offered to our primary grade students.
 
  • 100% of all certified employees in the Windham Exempted Village Schools, during the 2011-2012 school year, met the Hiqhly Qualified Teacher requirements mandated by federal legislation.
