Spanish II Gets a Taste of Culture

Ms. Sobol's Spanish II class moved their food unit into the kitchen this week. Students prepared culturally authentic Christmas tamales.

It is a family oStudents cookingriented Christmas tradition in Hispanic culture for families to spend hours together in preparation of delicious steamed pork tamales.

Corn husks were soaked overnight to become pliable as a wrapper. Meanwhile, students prepared the masa, a corn flour mixed with beef broth and lard. The masa is spread on top of the corn husks. Garlic and onion was chopped and slow cooked with a pork loin. Chile sauce was prepared by boiling dried chile pepper pods and blending the pods with water to make a sauce to add to the meat. The meat topping is spooned on top of the masa, and folded up into the cornhusks to be steamed for 2 hours.

Afterwards, the tamales are unwrapped and enjoyed with remaining chile sauce. Tamales are the ultimate comfort food! Ms. Sobol was delighted to carry out this Hispanic tradition with her students. Good work to Ms. Sobol and the Spanish II students! #windhamfamily
